I gerbilli sono dei roditori di piccole dimensioni, spesso confusi con i criceti, ma dalle caratteristiche proprie differenti. Tanto per cominciare si può notare la coda lunga. Le zampe poi sono più lunghe di quelle dei criceti e permettono ai gerbilli di saltare. Il mantello è rossiccio, anche se esistono varie colorazioni.  Il comportamento di questi animaletti è molto socievole e il loro padrone li troverà spesso a correre e scavare allegramente. Infatti il terrario per gerbilli deve contenere abbastanza terra da permettergli di giocare come farebbero in natura per cercare il cibo.

Soprattutto deve avere un coperchio, perché questi roditori saltano e potrebbero scappare dal terrario. Conviene prendere una coppia dello stesso sesso, in modo che si possano fare compagnia senza accoppiarsi, poiché si riproducono velocemente e ci si ritroverebbe con la casa piena di cuccioli di gerbilli in poco tempo. Il loro periodo di gestazione è 23/26 giorni, e le cucciolate arrivano a 12 cuccioli.

Prendersi cura di questi animali non è per nulla complicato, ma bisogna conoscerli bene per poterli allevare al meglio.

Come allevare un gerbillo: le basi

Per prima cosa scegliamo un gerbillo (ma meglio due, come dicevamo prima), che sia sano e attivo, con la coda lunga quanto il corpo e ricca di pelo: questo è un buon segno per capire se l’animale sta bene. La gabbia per gerbilli deve contenere una lettiera adeguata, che può anche essere di trucioli di faggio, tutolo di mais o pellet per stufe, l’importante che non sia di pino, abete e cedro perchè causano allergie.

Questo materiale, oltre ad assorbire gli escrementi ed i loro odori, permetterà ai nostri compagni animali di scavare tunnel dove giocare e nascondersi, creando un habitat naturale. Dobbiamo aggiungere periodicamente anche del fieno, utile anche come cibo. Se la gabbia è troppo piccola (dovrebbe essere almeno 70×40 cm) conviene lasciare libero l’animale di correre in un corridoio ogni tanto, stando attenti perché salta e tende a nascondersi sotto i mobili.

Si possono trovare facilmente nei supermercati. Frutta e verdura vanno aggiunte in piccole quantità, sia per evitare che i residui marciscano e facciano cattivo odore, sia perché troppi liquidi e zuccheri provocano diarrea a questi piccoli roditori. Mele, pere, piselli, finocchi, zucca, carote e broccoli sono tra i preferiti dei gerbilli, ma bisogna fare qualche prova per capire cosa preferisce il nostro animaletto.
