Cos’è il petauro dello zucchero

Un dolcissimo animaletto domestico pronto ad accorgliervi quando rientrate a casa? Si esatto è proprio lui: il Petauro dello zucchero! Di sicuro molti di voi non hanno idea  a quale animale mi sto riferendo poiché si tratta di una specie esotica molto particolare. Vi assicuro che ve ne innamorerete e lo vorrete anche voi!

Il Petauro è un animale dolce, affettuoso, fedele e di compagnia; può superare i 30 centimetri di lunghezza( compresa la coda) e soprattutto nei maschi può raggiungere un peso superiore ai 140 grammi. Il simpatico animaletto è provvisto di 4 dita con pollice opposto nelle zampe anteriori, e 5 nelle zampe posteriori; generalmente è di colore grigio con strisce bianche.

La sua particolarità fisica, che lo rende speciale,  è una membrana conosciuta anche come ” il Patagio”, che si estende dalle zampe anteriori quelle posteriore, permettendogli così di spiccare piccoli voli di 40 – 50 centimetri. Di sicuro lo spazio che dovrete dedicargli non potrà essere solo una gabbia di piccole dimensioni, non si tratta di un roditore ma di una piccola specie di marsupiale che avrà bisogno di un “mondo” tutto suo.  Una voliera per uccelli potrebbe essere la soluzione perfetta per fargli da casa.

Perché si chiama petauro dello zucchero

Un nome curioso non è vero? Scommetto che quando avete letto queste tre parole non avete immediatamente pensato ad un piccolo mammifero marsupiale, ma molto probabilmente ad una pianta. L’origine del nome viene dal latino, Petaurus Breviceps, e vuol dire esattamente: acrobata dalla testa corta; la correlazione con lo zucchero è dovuta all’esigenza del piccolo marsupiale di nutrirsi di alimenti dolci, come lo zucchero. Il nome della specie, Breviceps, indica l’appartenenza al gruppo di animali falangeridi ovvero dotati di dita.

Attenzione, se decidete di acquistare il Petauro dovete essere a conoscenza dei seguenti aspetti, assolutamente non da non sottovalutare; si tratta di un animale sociale che ama condividere, e che quindi non può stare da solo; dovrete acquistare sempre due Petauri per evitare che muoiano di solitudine. Riconoscono il padrone, quindi vi saranno molto fedeli.

Dovete anche sapere che questo animaletto deve essere sistemato in luoghi lontani dalla luce, ed essendo una specie marsupiale gli dovrete costruire una piccola tana dove andare a nascondersi; dovete considerare che il Petauro dello zucchero nasce in Austrialia e vive originariamente sulle cime degli alberi delle foreste pluviali e costiere di Nuova Guinea. Si tratta di un animale che ama la notte, difatti la luce lo infastidisce e lo rende quasi goffo.

Cosa mangiano i petauri dello zucchero

La domanda immediatamente successiva all’acquisto di questo animale è come curarlo e nutrirlo, già: bella impresa! A quanto pare il Petauro è un fervido sostenitore delle diete, mangia principalmente frutta e verdura, ma non solo, in quanto se nel loro menù sono previste locuste e grilli questi curiosi animaletti sono più che soddisfatti!

L’alimentazione del Petauro richiede anche una quantità di calcio pari ad 1Kg che può essere integrata 2-3 volte a settimana; il tofu ad esempio contiene una buona quantità di calcio ma non sempre è gradito dal dolce animaletto. Principalmente il Petauro predilige tra la frutta: le mele, le pere, la papaia, mango, uva, ciliege, albicocche come frutta; tra le verdure dovrete nutrirlo con: carote, insalata, cetrioli, zucchine. Qualche volte potrete servirgli anche della carne, l’importante è che sia molto magra poiché soprattutto i Petauri maschi tendono ad ingrassare.

I Petauri, necessitano di una cura costante, quindi è sconsigliato acquistarli per la gioia di un bambino. Nella maggior parte dei casi diviene un impegno per voi genitori e un semplice compagno di giochi per i vostri figli. Acquistate questo animaletto solo se siete pronti a convivere con lui quasi 10 anni, e solo se volete davvero prendervene cura poiché richiederà la vostra attenzione costante negli anni.

Il Petauro dello zucchero è un animale esotico di piccole dimensioni, certo non lo troverete in comuni negozi per animali accanto a cani e gatti, ma dovrete cercarne alcuni che vendano prettamente animali esotici.

Per acquistare un Petauro dello zucchero potete rivolgervi o ad un allevamento specifico o anche a dei veterinari specializzati in animali esotici.

Il prezzo di un Petauro dello zucchero si aggira in media intorno ai 150 euro e tenendo conto che si tratta di un animale sociale che non può stare da solo in quanto soffrirebbe di depressione, occorre acquistarne almeno due.

In questo caso bisogna anche tener conto delle possibili problematiche del tenere più Petauri, poiché lo spazio che dovrete dedicare a vostri nuovi piccoli amici, sarà il doppio rispetto a quello che ne avreste dedicato per uno solo.
